Last Moments of Vali

Vali lay on the floor, hurt and in pain
He never thought his life would go in vain
Lord Rama, Lakshman and Hanuman approached him
Vali had almost fainted and his vision was dim

Sugriva sat beside Vali, his eyes filled with tears
Fallen with Vali were Sugriva's hatred, anger and fears
Where Vali was fallen, Tara came to the spot
Crying helplessly and shedding tears that were hot

"Lord, my dear Vali, did I not warn you not to fight
Out of anger on Sugriva, you took my words light
Now leaving me alone, you are going to be gone
What shall I do on this earth, living all alone"

Vali who was fainted, regained his senses
Seeing Lord Rama, his anger knew no pretenses
Vali gathered his strength, and decided to talk
Criticising Rama, about the path Rama does walk

"Rama what kind of person are you
Good qualities in you are very few
Like renunciates and sages you do look
But weapons in your hand, you have took

What harm did I do you, you killed me thus
Was there any problem or tiff between us
On what basis did you take Sugriva's side?
And shot an arrow at me, while you did hide"

Saying thus, His anger on Rama, Vali did vent
In Vali's understanding of Dharma, there was a dent
To make Vali realise his mistake and crime
Lord Rama readily answered, without charging a dime

"Among men on earth, I am the righteous kind
My qualities you can't see, I don't mind
I am a Kshatriya, so I carry weapons
On dutiful people like me, Dharma depends

You may have not offended me
But you already offended my friend to be
You beat up my friend, who fell at your feet
You with reverence and respect, he did treat

He apologised to you for taking your seat
He surrendered, everything to you, clean and neat
But still, you thrashed him without any mercy
And usurped his wife, which is very crazy

Heartlessly you behaved with Sugriva, my friend
You expect mercy from others, when your life is at end
You took your brother's wife and made him a fool
You please do tell me, how is that cool

I killed you sharply while I hid
What is wrong with what I did?
I followed, while killing you, a hunter's norm
I stealthily watched you and attacked, remaining calm"

Not knowing what to say, Vali became silent
He knew with his brother, he had been violent
He did realise, taking Ruma for himself was a heartless act
Lord Rama's words pierced Vali's reasoning with skill and tact

Vali's soul went out of the body and came in
He realised he was suffering, his own sin
Vali could see Rama as Vishnu, in his last moments
Vali accepted in his heart, the change of events

Vali embraced Angada, his own son
The love he shed was a tonne
"Angad, my son,  never go against Ram
With Sugriva, you always be very calm"

"Sugriv! my brother, forgive me
Merciless with you, I did be
Now you got my kingdom for your's
I wish you rule it, for many years"

Vali embraced Tara, shedding tears
He was a soul who lived without fears
To Sugriva, he gifted a necklace he wore
As a good brother, at the end, he did score

He embraced all the ones he loved
And to Rama's Feet he bowed
He wanted Angad to realise the greatness of Ram
And so he sung Rama's praise with poetic norm

"Lord Rama, I praise your lotus like feet
You to me, would have been sweet
If only I had been sweet with my brother
About his minor shortcomings, if I did not bother

Oh dear Lord, whose colour is dark
Whose vision in me creates a spark
The spark of wisdom creating light
Destroying ignorance, that made me fight

If to my brother, I had been good
You to me, would have been good
I would've got a chance to serve you
The greatest Lord, whose colour is blue

Oh Great Lord with a broad blue chest
Worshipping and serving you would be the best
Heartless beings do not get a chance
To serve you and experience spiritual trance

Oh Dear Lord, with lotus like eyes
I should've been to my brother very nice
If I had behaved with my brother right
I would have got, a chance to fight

Along your side, as a soldier and hero
But now for me, those chances are zero
In my place, I want Angad my son
To serve the Lord, of the lineage of the sun"

Saying so, Vali breathed his last
The sorrow at the scene was very vast
Vali was placed on a wooden pyre
Angad, son of Vali, lit up the fire

Thus Vali who was arrogant of his strength
Breathed his last, suffering at length
 Character not might impresses Ram
Jai Shri Ram! Jai Jai Shri Ram
