My Lord's Story: Goodness Incarnate

Ramayanam in English poetry.

The Supreme Lord of the Universe was once born on this earth as a Human Being, faced challenges and had His share of pain and pleasure going through both good and bad times like any of us. Like any of us He too, took His turn in laughter and cry.

This humility of The Lord, that makes Him come down to earth and share with us our difficulties to show us a way to handle them is what I admire in Him. This quality of Him, makes me surrender to Him unconditionally and makes me want to sing His Glory on and on and on.

My Lord's Story is an out pour of my devotion that seeps out in gratitude for the pains He took to be a lighthouse for us, to cross the ocean of Samsara.

Vegetarianism

I have already posted an article on how I chose to become a vegetarian under the title Vegetarianism and me.

Two weeks from now I will be seven years old as a vegetarian.

Apart from the aesthetic reasons for choosing to be a vegetarian, I also have a set of rational reasons based on scientific facts which substantiate that vegetarianism is the healthiest choice.

Plants synthesis food from water, air, earth and sunlight. The food thus produced is fresh and chemically less complex. The food thus produced is eaten by animals and digested. During digestion  a number of acids are added to it and gets deposited in the muscle tissues of the animals resulting in the growth of the animal. Animals killed for food are atleast three to four months old. So the flesh of the animal is nothing but a much more complex and older form of the same water, air, earth and sunlight combination. That's the reason why it stinks while an animal is cut open. Obviously the body odour of a vegetarian would be comparitively much lesser than that of a non-vegetarian. [provided the veggie has regular bathing habits :) ]

We all know that it takes much more time for a dead animal to decay than it takes for a dead plant to decay. Similarly the stress on the digestive system is much lesser for vegetarian food.

The fat that is got from the animals gets deposited on the inner walls of the blood vessels resulting in the decrease in size of the inner diameter of the blood vessels. When you become a vegetarian all these deposits get washed off in two or three months and you feel like you have kept down a heavy burden.

The deposits in the blood vessels also reduce the overall blood circulation through out the body. Less blood circulation is less supply of oxygen. Less supply of oxygen to the brain is lack of briskness. Less supply of oxygen to the other parts of body is lack of resistance towards diseases. Inspite of being a non-vegetarian a individual can overcome this drawback to some extent by doing proper breathing exercises.

When an animal is killed, it gets afraid and struggles for life. During which the body secretes adrenaline. Adrenaline makes the muscles stiff, in order to help it get less injured. This is one of the self-automated functions that happen in both animals and human body as a self defense technique. So when adrenaline is taken in along with the food it causes similar effects even under normal conditions and is very poisonous too.

There is no reason to fear becoming week because of becoming a vegetarian. Except for Vitamin-D, all other nutrients are available in vegetarian food. Vitamin-D is generated in our skin when exposed to sunlight.

Once I read Osho saying, "When you stop taking non-vegetarian food, a new intelligence is released in you."

I have experienced it. Osho's statement is very true.

(This doesn't mean that I claim to be very intelligent. But I definitely can claim that I have become less foolish. :-) )

The great Tamil Poet Thiruvalluvar has dedicated an entire chapter emphasising the importance of being a vegetarian. In one of the poem he says, "The one who doesn't kill and refuses to eat flesh is worshipped by every other creature."

I have the strength, right and oppurtunity to kill you and yet choose to let you live, will you not worship me?

A thief's redemption.

Long long ago, in the jungles of ancient India, there lived a thief. His name was Ratnagar. He was the bread winner of his family. He appeared suddenly in front of by passers of the forest, threatened them and stripped them off their possessions. He killed those who refused to subdue to his intentions. After making his income for the day he went to the city in disguise and purchased all that was needed for his family and returned home happily.

Once as Ratnagar was waiting for his prey, he saw a man coming on the way singing a beautiful song. The man appeared to be very rich, but was in simple clothes. He carried a musical instrument which he played in accordance to the song. Listening to it was a divine experience. Ratnagar for a moment forgot himself in the delight of the music. The man went past Ratnagar's hideout and disappeared among the woods.

Now Ratnagar came back to his senses. He thought the man had fooled him with his simple looks and the divine song and escaped cleverly from his clutches. So he went hastily along the path the man disappeared and caught up with him in no time.

The man was undisturbed by Ratnagar's horrible appearance and smiled at him looking straight into his eyes. He had been in business for decades. He had always encountered people only with two kind of reactions. Either they feared him and gave away all their wealth or they fought with anger and killed themselves. But this man, standing in front of him, was cool like a cucumber. Ratnagar was perplexed to see a man without fear nor anger. For the first time in life a man drew his respect and admiration.

Ratnagar was quite sure that this man was playing some kind of trick with him. So, he hid all his admiration for him and caught him by his throat.

"The brightness of your face and the texture of your skin suggest that you are a wealthy person, but you try to decieve me by your simple clothes and innocent looks. You better tell me where you've hidden all your wealth or die a dreadful death"

The man retorted with a smile that was so pleasant to the thief's heart. He said, "Of course, I am one of the wealthiest persons in this universe. And I don't have any objection in sharing my wealth with you, because my wealth is the kind which will multiply itself as much as I give."

Ratnagar was taken aback by this statement. He had been receiving a series of shocks and surprises from the man in his clutches. He loosened his grip on the man with eyes wide open with amazement.

"But", the man continued, "Tell me, why do you do this dreadful deed, instilling fear in fellow humans?"

The love and compassion in the man's voice touched Ratnagar somewhere deep within. For unknown reasons tears started to flow down his eyes.

"I have a family to take care. I have parents who are too old to take care of themselves. Who took care of me when I was incapable of taking care of myself. I have a wife and children."

"Are you aware that you accumulate sin by your devious acts? And that you will end up in hell?"

"I don't care. With my family's love even hell will be heaven for me."

"But, my friend, your family is not going to be with you in hell. It is you who committed the errors and it is you who will be punished. Not them."

"You don't know about my family. They all love me as much as they love themselves. I am dearer to them than their lives. They will come with me even to hell"

"I don't think so."

"Your words enrage me. Don't ever dare to talk less of my family's loyalty to me"

"I am sure there is no one on earth who will be ready to accept your sins. This is the nature of human beings. In good times there are many to be with you. But in bad times all will forsake you."

"I can bring my family here and show you that they are different, if you would stay here till I come back."

The holy man, with a smile, said, "I will be happy to see such people."

Ratnagar was about to leave to fetch his family, when a suspicion arose in him.

"You cunning fox, you delude me with your music, baffle me with your innocence, confuse me with your arguments and you plan to run away when I go to get my family. I don't want to talk with you anymore, better give me your wealth before I give you a taste of hell"

"My friend, if you think I might run away, tie me up somewhere here."

Ratnagar had no words to say. This man was shaking him to the core with a character unknown to him. But his heart told him that this man was someone very special. He had to take him seriously. Anyhow he didn't want to take any chances, so he tied the holy man to a tree deep into the jungle and left for his home.

Seldom did he realise that this was the last time he was visiting his home.

Ratnagar went straight to his mother and told her about the man he met in the forest. He asked her, "Mother, are you and me not one. Is there any difference between you and me. Pain or pleasure, joy or sorrow have we not been with each other? Even in future, in case I land up in hell, would you not be there with me to comfort me?"

His mother understood that his son had met a person of divine origin and has offended him. Now, if she accept the sins even just for word's sake she may incur the wrath of the holy man.

So she said, "Son. It is your duty to take care of me. What control do I have over you? Did I ever tell you to chose a anarchic path? I have never flawed in my life as a daughter, as a wife nor a as a mother. I accepted all that you gave because I had no one else to give me. Moreover it was my right to get back what I had done for you when you were a child."

Ratnagar was shaken with disappointment. He went to his father who gave him a similar answer in different words. His children too were not ready to pay for his misgivings. At last, he went to his wife, whom he loved as much as himself with a last pinch of hope left out in his heart.

"Dear", he said, "Are you and me not one soul dwelling in two bodies? Have we not walked around the fire and sworn to be with each other in both fortune and misfortune? Would you not come with me, even if I end up in hell?"

His wife said, "It is the custom on this earth, that the husband goes out to earn for his family and the wife runs the family with the income the husband brings in. I never expected you too bring in so much wealth. Even if you had brought in a few pennies by working honestly, I would have run the family with full contentment. I have never flawed from the vows of marriage. I have never looked upon some other man with lust nor have I ever shown any disrespect to your parents and you in these many years."

Ratnagar didn't want to listen to her anymore. Something within him broke. Something that was driving him all these years, something for which he had spent all his life, energy, time and heart, broke and fell apart. He felt he was left alone. Right in his home, right in middle of his family he felt he was an orphan. All the anxiety, skill and efficiency he had shown in his work through out his life, all on a sudden, became stupid and meaningless.

Denounced by his beloveds, dismayed by their careless attitude, Ratnagar walked away from his house. Never to return. He walked back to the place where he had tied up the holy man. As soon as he saw the man tied up in the tree, he fell at his feet crying like a child. He cried loudly seeking the holy man's help to show him the way. The holy man, to him, was now the only refuge.

The holy man who was none other than Sage Narada, one of the prominent devotees of Lord Narayana, embraced him and said, "My son, my wealth lies deep down in my heart. It is nothing but the devotion to the almighty. I always sing his praises and rejoice life. That wealth can never be taken away from me by anyone other than the Lord Himself. Everytime I give a taste of it to anyone, it grows multifold. I eat, that is provided to me and sleep where I am allowed to. I never hold back anything for future need. I roam all around the universe singing the praise of my Lord. I have nothing to loose because I possess nothing. Now, I will teach you to wash away your sins and enjoy the same happiness that I do."

Ratnagar wiped away his tears. With renewed hope he decided to do as the sage says.

Narada taught Ratnagar to sit and meditate, ever uttering the names of the Lord. Ratnagar was incapable of pronouncing any name. Among thousand names that the Lord has, Ratnagar was not able to pronounce even one. He again grew dejected fearing that there was no salvation for him.

Narada then taught him the most simple of all the names- RAMA.

Even this name refused to enter into the lips of Ratnagar.

But still Narada, the loving Guru, who was determined to redeem his student who fell at his feet, thought of an alternative. He reversed the syllables and asked Ratnagar to try telling Ma Ra. That at last was possible by him.

So he sat with his eyes closed ever saying "Ma Ra, Ma ra, Ma Ra." Which inturn became, "Rama Rama Rama" after continuous utterances.

Ratnagar gave up all other intentions and went on and on. He went on for so long that an ant hill grew around him. After many many years he awoke from his unhindered meditation, completely transformed. He was no more the ignorant thief. He was an enlightened sage. He was named Valmiki. Valmiki means the one who came from the anthill.

The rest, as they say, is History.

Valmiki wrote the Ramayana, which is both a poetic and spiritual retreat. It is called Valmiki Ramayana. It is the mother of all other Ramayanas rendered by various poets.

When I think of this story, what strikes me is the innocent selflessness of Ratnagar. Though he had been bad to so many. He had been a loving bread winner for his family. He had served his family without any selfishness. All that he did was for the welfare of his family and not for him. God never lets down such a loving person. God himself sends a Guru to such a person and helps him/her realise the ultimate truth.

How I and my life kicked each other.

I've read some blogs which are bent upon tickling your ribs till you laugh to death. This article is such an attempt. If this artcle makes you laugh, thanks to my sense of humor. If it eats up your time keeping you lip tight, then you need to hand over Mr.Salil Ravindran, Who's me?, to the FBI. He is the one who inspired me in doing this.

I worked as an RJ for one of the most prominent radio stations in Chennai. For one minute. But since I repeated every word twice to make sure the listeners hear me properly, they said I was over qualified. Poor fellows, couldn't identify the genius in me in one minute. I wished them better luck next time and came back.

There are quiet a number of fellows who haven't identified the genius in me. One such dude is Narayanamurty, INFOSYS.

He asked me, "If Sam is shorter than Robert, ROBERT is shorter than Michael, Michael is taller than Alex, Alex is not taller than Sam. Who is the shortest?"

I said, "Simple. Sam is the shortest. Just three letters"

I don't know why, but I had to wish him better luck next time.

Mr. Shiv Nadar must comparatively be a luckier person. Though he too felt that I was over qualified for his technologies company, he requested me not to spoil his BPO concern which was doing excellent.

So HCLBPO Chennai got a great genius as its employee.

There after five to six months of intense, severe and spartan training I hit the floor, with my head.

One fine evening I woke up to see the backlight of my mobile going on and off. It said Teamlead calling...

I picked up the phone. "Hello"

"Hey Ramesh, where are you? Your team is already logged in"

My God! Why did I handicap this creature from its screaming abilities? I looked around here and there and saw my Grandma's photo. Thank God and Grandma.

I said, "John, my Grandma.... my grandma... DIED!"

"Why didn't you inform earlier?"

"She didn't inform me either"

The call got disconnected. I lay on the bed cursing myself for killing my grandma. I could have killed her some other time. Just a headache would have been sufficient for this. By now, I know, you would have concluded that I lied to my team leader. I am sorry. You have completely misunderstood me. My grandma actually did die. But that was ten years ago. And I love her very much, at that time she helped me quit my quarterly exams.

The next day I was awake and ready when the cab came to my house. But I was in a dilemma whether to go or not. I can't keep wasting leaves, so I decided to go. Won't it take at least two or three days for someone to come back, when they take leave for their grandma's death. I wasn't sure. But I knew, me going today would be unnatural.

So I went straight to my Team leader, who was happily surprised seeing me on the floor, and said, "John. My grandma actually didn't die. She had just fainted. We took her to the hospital and now she is doing fine."

His bright smile faded and he gave me crossed eyed look which made me put my head down. May be he understood I was planning to kill her some other time.

After a few days it so happened that a customer liked me very much that he went on talking to me, increasing my AHT and my Team leader's and mentor's BP. As a person who believes in smart work rather than hard work, I asked him whether he could see a cable running from the telephone to the wall jack.

He said, "Yes."

I asked him to pull it out.

He said, "I see two cables coming out of the wall jack. One goes to the modem and another to the telephone. Which one should I pull out?"

I said, "Both."

“Okay. Give me a second.” And the call got disconnected.

The person in charge of quality had been listening to this. He already was very much impressed about my arguing skills, which I exhibited aggressively during the previous feed back session. He came running with joy, with the above conversation typed in a white sheet and gave it to me proudly. I also saw the following lines. “Agent guided customer into disconnecting call”

I said, “I intended to say, both lines should not be disconnected, but the customer was in hurry”

The quality person laughed. If you had seen old Tamil films, you could have seen the villains laughing such laughter.

I was asked to relax in the training sessions. I wanted to celebrate this occasion by eating to my heart’s content. I went to a Punjabi Dhaba Express. There I saw the girl, whom I then wanted to propose, having lunch with a guy who was much uglier than me. Every body turned to my direction hearing an explosion that arose somewhere near my shirt pocket. Till today I live with the hope that it was not my heart.

That day, the great genius decided to be with HCLBPO no more.

I hope Mr. Shiv Nadar, doesn’t mourn for it till today.

Note:This article has been written with the intention of making its reader laugh.

This is totally fictitious. Any coincidence with true names, companies and incidents are purely coincidental and unintentional.- OFFICIALLY

But unofficially speaking, yes, all the characters in this work are 100% alive, 200% eating and 300% rocking this earth and don't intend to stop until it falls off its orbit.

Two precepts.

Mr. Magudeshwaran was my chemistry lecturer in the first year of my college.

He spoke less about chemistry and more about life. He used to say, “What is the use of teaching you information which is already in the book? You need to know a lot which is not in the syllabus.”

One day he gave two wonderful precepts.

“Enjoy more of Active Pleasure and less of Passive Pleasure.”

“Be conscious of what you do every moment.”

I did not realize then how profound they were. Though only with partial understanding, I put them to use to the best of my abilities. Now, I rejoice.

So, this post is a small dedication of gratitude to Mr. Magudeshwaran.

“Enjoy more of Active Pleasure and less of Passive Pleasure.”

I think active pleasure and passive pleasure can be differentiated and better explained by giving a few examples.

Eating food is passive pleasure. Cooking food is active pleasure.

Listening to a song is passive pleasure. Singing a song is active pleasure.

Watching a cricket match is passive pleasure. Playing cricket is active pleasure.

Reading is passive pleasure. Writing is an active pleasure.

Smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages are passive pleasures.

Not that we should never enjoy passive pleasure, but minimizing them is recommended.

If I have to put it in a different way, it would be: Take less and give more.

“Be conscious of what you do every moment.”

The mind keeps oscillating between the past and the future. It regrets about the past and is anxious of the future. The regrets of the past, causes depression and the anxiety of the future, causes tension and stress. The best way to come out of this is to stick to the present moment and give our best shot now. What ever we do, if we can do it with full awareness without worrying about the past and future, our future is bound to become better.

This reminds me of a dialogue in the movie Kung fu Panda.

“The past is History. The future is mystery. The present is a gift. That’s why it is called present.”

The God of Truth.

Happy Gandhi Jayanthi.

I wish to share my thoughts about The Mahathma.

To me Mahathma is no less than an incarnation of God. That too as a devotee of Rama, I look upon him as an miniature of Lord Rama. To substantiate my statement let me share two observations of mine.

Once our freedom fighters were going on a procession shouting slogans praising Gandhiji. A few of them were attacked by a few police men. The mass in return burnt down the police station and attacked the police men. Gandhiji was disappointed that his followers acted in such brutal way. He called back the non cooperation movement and went on fasting. People became sad. They promised that they never will repeat the mistake again. They went on streets giving garlands to the Police and British soldiers. This incident to me is a miracle. Something like Krishna lifting a mountain with his little finger. I wonder how people could love a man so much. They were ready to be kicked and wounded, only to do what he expected of them. They were ready to sacrifice even their lives under his leadership. They cared nothing about their food clothing and shelter. All they wanted was to do what Gandhi expected of them.

In my understanding, this is the power of Goodness. The power of faith in Truth.

The same incident is there in Lord Rama's life too.

When Lord Rama goes on exile, to the forest, people of Ayodhya came behind him. They left their belongings and houses. There were children, women and the old in the crowd that followed him. They said they do not want to live in a city where Rama was absent. They said they preferred the forest. They said, "It is the people who make the city. We will come with you to the jungle and make the jungle a city. Let the animals come to this city and let it become forest."

I believe in heaven and hell. I believe all those who lead a life of goodness will defintely go to heaven. In that perspective it is my belief that all the freedom fighters of India, must be in heaven now. That is because they followed Gandhiji. Gandhiji inspired them to do good, walk the path of goodness and helped them reach heaven.

In Rama's life this happens. After he ruled for more than ten thousands he was invited back to heaven by the creator, Brahma. He gave all the responsibilties to his sons and chose a day to return to his heavenly abode. On that day he decided to enter the river Sarayu and caste off his body. He entered the river, following him the whole population of Ayodhya entered it. Rama arose from the river with resplendent glory as Vishnu and went back to his divine abode. Following him all men, women and chidren went to heaven. There the creator Brahma created a new heaven, a special one, only for them.

This is the quality of a true leader. He must not just fight for the rights and comfort of people on earth, but he must also assure for them a place in heaven. Our Mahathma achieved it with perfection. This is my firm conviction.

To me Mahathma is a Rama. Who inspired people on the path of Goodness and Peace.

To me Mahathma is a Jesus Christ. Who lived a life of sacrifice. Who bore pain, for no error he commited, only for the sake of his men. Who taught people to love their enemies.

To me Mahathma is a Buddha. The enlightened one.

To me Mahathma is a God. The God of truth.

MIGHT is no more RIGHT.

“The moment you are born on this earth, this society starts to teach you ignorance. It applies many colors on you. You are an Indian. You are a Tamilian. You are a Hindu. You are this caste and so on. But the truth is, you are just a human being. A human being with hunger, thirst, emotions and love. If you are really honest you will accept that you are just a being. Even the prefix human can be removed.”

I think this is one important statement of Osho which each and every Human being on earth should memorize. Simply because there are quiet a number of leaders to mislead people through out the world. They keep brain washing people for their own selfish benefits and get things done only for their own political and material benefits. They will say they are fighting for this religion, this region, this caste but they never do any good for whoever they claim to work for. Instead they make enough money get good amount of media coverage and become heroes, at the cost of screwing up innocent lives. Above all they spoil the reputation of the group they claim to work for.

If you notice you will see

1. That these people live under tight security that they won't even get a bruise in the violence they induce.(At the maximum they will be arrested and come out in bail waving their hands to the cameras.)

2.They are INCAPABLE of hurting the persons who actually offended them. (Most cases the real offender is dead and gone)

3. They get hold of innocent people who may even don't know why they are punished for and show their bravery or valor whatever they like to call.

4. They will never come down and fight like Che Guevara or Gandhi but they will send youngsters or mobs whom they manage to buy either by brain washing or by money.

5. They keep talking about history. They will never allow you to realize that learning History is only to not repeat the mistakes of the past.

These kind of leaders are like cancer cells in the body of Humanity. They will never ever allow this earth to be a place for peaceful living. The days of the warriors have gone. This era is the era for poets, writers and artists. We need to realize this. The days where men can exhibit their fighting skills and valor has gone thousands of years ago.

Today's wars and violence are all ways of the cowards. This applies to both civil violence and war between nations.

Taking a gun hiding behind trees and shooting when the enemy is not aware is no valor.
Hundred men getting into a worship place and kicking ten men is no bravery. Keeping a bomb in a railway station and killing children, women and old people is no heroism. Coming in an aircraft and bombing some poor village is no valiance.

Let's be good humans. Let's respect each others religion. Let's respect others point of view, and their feelings. Let's make this earth a better place for children to live. At least for the sake of all the children through out the world let's make this happen.

If you feel what I am telling is correct, please watch this song by colonial cousins in you tube.
Krishna nee begane. Let those five minutes be a worship for a better world.

Vegetarianism and me

During college days I was a non-vegetarian. I always had strong arguments as to why being a non-vegetarian is not wrong. But then one day my mom, send me to buy chicken. There when I saw the little creature struggle for its life at the hands of the butcher, a thought struck my mind. “Any creature that we eat, pleads us to let go before we kill it. But we ignore it. Why not consider?” I didn’t know. I couldn’t tell why we don’t consider that plea.

When I talked about this to some non-veg lovers, they came up with different arguments.

“Don’t tell you get vegetarian food without killing. Is that not life?”

“It is not about killing. If it is about killing I know I can’t even brush my teeth”

“All creatures are created for human beings and it is our right.”

“May be it’s our right. But what is the compulsion?”

“If eating meat is sin then what kind of vegetables, God created for Lions and Tigers?”

“First of all it is not a question of sin or not sin. It is about considering a poor creature’s plea to live. Second, Lions and Tigers don’t have a choice nor do they have a discriminating ability to reconsider what they are doing.”

Then one of the most wonderful arguments came from one of my close friends.

“If all of us become vegetarians then the eco-system will be affected”

That only makes me laugh even now. The ozone layer has depleted in some parts of the world. So much deforestation has taken place. We are not inhaling the same pristine air that our grand parents inhaled. We have done nothing to improve it. So many wild creatures have become extinct. All these and much worse things have happened because of our irresponsibility. But now my friend is very much bothered about the eco-system.

I understood these things need not be argued nor justified. It is all an individual decision.

So I decided I will be a vegetarian. Not because eating meat is sin. Not because I should restrain myself from killing. Just to give my heart the satisfaction that I am not one of the many persons who ignore a creature’s plea.

if my desires are fulfilled i take it as ur blessing.............. if not i understand they r not good for me......u came to me as my father...... u came to me as my mother......... i am ur slave and i am at ur service because i know u rule this earth........ historians talk of many rulers who ruled on this earth........ but i know it was u who always ruled and it was ur will that is always done........ u create....... u maintain and u destroy......... u r responsible for all that is good and all that is bad.......... u created the bad to give recognition for the good.... and destroyed the bad when they dominated the good......... u gave pleasure ....... u gave pain....... u gave pain to recognise pleasure...... when i thought i was something i was not complete........ when i understand i am nothing i am complete......... i am always ready to take ur command and act because u r my boss...... if u want me get married then my wife and children r a gift from u....... if u want me stay single and serve the society the satisfaction of selfless service is a gift from you...... if u want me to stay in the Himalayan caves and meditate, then the silence and peace is the gift from u......i surrender my will to u...... because i know u have the highest intelligence and the greatest knowledge...........let ur will always be done because that is always good for me...........
with love.......
